POY! SKIT GUIDELINES:

  • In a small group, participants might simply read their lines, or glance at their lines to get the idea so they can speak in their own words.
  • Most POY! skits require no practice in advance.
  • Have any small children play a brief part. Most scripts have an optional part for children, listed last under Participants.
  • Most scripts have a Narrator who should read the script beforehand to see how to keep moving the story along.
  • It is not necessary to employ costumes and objects, unless the skit recommends such.
  • It is not required to have an audience watch the skit. All present may participate.
  • Scripture and paraphrases, if any, usually appear in bold.

PARTICIPANTS:

Husband (also serves as Narrator)

Prompter (Optional). Prompter shouts a brief line and Companions repeat it.

SCRIPT:

Husband

Let us find family members’ duties in Colossians, chapters 3 and 4. Ladies first. What are the duties of a wife?

Wife

Well, it says, “Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.”

Husband

(Stand, face wife, hands on hips.) Aha! Hear that, wife? You have to do everything I say! Ha!

Wife

(Stand, face husband, hands on hips.) Now, just a minute, husband dear. It does not say that you are to “subject” me, but that I am to submit myself ? that means willingly.

Husband

Hmm. Well, you have a point.

Wife

Yes. Now, what do you find about husbands’ duties?

Husband

It says, “Husbands, love your wives and do not be embittered against them.”

Wife

Aha! That means a husband who is patient and loving makes his wife’s submission joyful. Did you understand that, dear husband? You have to love me. The Bible says somewhere you are to love me “as Christ loved His church and gave His life for it.” So there!

Husband

Well, yes, but can’t you say that in a bit more submissive tone?

Wife

Oh! I guess I could. Okay. You love me; I respect you. We’re both happy.

Husband

Good! Now, let’s continue in Colossians. It says, Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. Did you hear that, son (daughter)?

Wife

Aha! Children, did you hear that? It’s time to go to bed. Now!

Junior (June)

Not now! Not now!

Prompter & Companions

Not now! Not now!

Junior (June)

I want to stay up longer and play video games. Why do you always nag me to go to bed when I’m not sleepy yet?

Father

(Shout angrily) Is that the way you talk back to your mother? You are going to be grounded for a week. You deserve worse! You, do what your mother says right now!

Wife

Wait! What does Colossians say about correcting our children. Read on, father, please.

Husband

It says, “Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart.”

Wife

Did you correct your child in a way that would not rile a child?

Husband

I guess not. I’m sorry. I should not have shouted at you so angrily, son (daughter).

Now, please do as your mother says, and we’ll all be happy.

Junior (June)

Yes, father. I’ll go right now. I was getting sleepy anyway. Good night mom. Good night dad. I love you both. Good night, all!

Prompter & Companions

Good night, all! Good night, all!

DISCUSS:

What is a believing husband’s primary duty to his wife?

What is a believing wife’s primary duty to her husband?

What is a child’s primary duty to parents?

What is a duty of parents with their children?

Can we who are fathers make a serious commitment to have family devotions daily, to read and pray with our wives and children?

(Let those who are willing covenant together in prayer to do so.)
