Jesus Equipped Kingdom Workers

 Luke 10: 1-21

POY! SKIT GUIDELINES:

  • In a small group, participants might simply read their lines, or glance at their lines to get the idea so they can speak in their own words.
  • Most POY! skits require no practice in advance.
  • Have any small children play a brief part. Most scripts have an optional part for children, listed last under Participants.
  • Most scripts have a Narrator who should read the script beforehand to see how to keep moving the story along.
  • It is not necessary to employ costumes and objects, unless the skit recommends such.
  • It is not required to have an audience watch the skit. All present may participate.
  • Scripture and paraphrases, if any, usually appear in bold.

PARTICIPANTS:

Narrator
Mr. Fretter
Mr. Ready
Friends(optional) are others who want to take part, including children. They merely repeat Villagers’ words.

SCRIPT:

Narrator

Jesus sent disciples in pairs to Israel’s towns to announce His coming Kingdom, Luke 10.
Let’s follow two of them, Mr. Fretter and Mr. Ready.
Listen for guidelines for workers who reach people outside of their own society.

Mr. Fretter

I’m leaving now, while the weather is good. I don’t want a storm to come while I am on the trail.
Goodbye, Mr. Ready! [I have no idea what ‘I’m off’ meant. Taking time off? Leaving now? Remember, simple speech often proves the least clear speech, even if written in imagined words of a ‘real’ population.]

Mr. Ready

Wait! Jesus said not to go alone; we’re to go in pairs. I’m going with you.

Mr. Fretter

Okay, grab your coat; it might rain soon. Better take extra socks, too.

Mr. Ready

Wait! Jesus said first to pray for workers. We need many more workers to complete the task.

Mr. Fretter

We’ll need His help to face any wolves, too. By the way, what kind of wolves did He mean when He said we’ll be like lambs among wolves?

Mr. Ready

We’ll soon find out.

Mr. Fretter

Wait until I fill these bags with dried fish and bread, and find enough money.

Mr. Ready

No! Jesus said not to take extra stuff; and we’re to rely on our hosts to supply our needs.

Narrator

The pair prays and leaves. On the way, they meet friends.

Villager & Friends (Optional)

Come! Come! Let’s play games!

Mr. Fretter

Mr. Ready, let’s stop and spend a day or two with our friends here.
My aunt lives here, too. She feeds her visitors well.

Mr. Ready

No! Jesus said not to greet people on the way. He meant not to let anyone sidetrack us.
We can stop by briefly on our way back.

Narrator

They traveled on and came to the town to which Jesus had sent them.

Mr. Fretter

My feet hurt! Well, here we are. Let’s sing in the town square and attract a big crowd.

Mr. Ready

No. Jesus told us to find persons of peace, stay with them, and eat what they give us.
He meant persons who’ll open doors for the gospel in their community of friends.[Not to imply that the workers are to go from house to house to follow-up with the first guy’s friends. Too many local and foreign workers seek to fulfill a carnal dream of themselves as great preachers in demand amongst the people.]

Mr. Fretter

Well, I hope our peace person can also cook. I’m starved.
I wonder what kind of food they’ll serve here. What if it’s not Kosher?
These remote villages have weird customs. I’m getting hungry, and I’m worried.

Mr. Ready

Don’t fret over food; Jesus said to eat whatever they give us.
And stop worrying about your own needs.
We’re to pray for the sick in Jesus’ name and announce His Kingdom.

Mr. Fretter

But what if we can’t find a person of peace who shows us hospitality?

Mr. Ready

Then, as Jesus said, we’ll shake the dust from our feet and go elsewhere.

Narrator

Mr. Fretter and Mr. Ready found a man of peace, stayed in his home, announced that the God’s Kingdom was near, and healed in Jesus’ name. Then they returned to Jesus joyfully.

Mr. Fretter

Lord, the greatest thing happened! We cast a devil out of a guy that it was tormenting.

Mr. Ready

Yea! Was that exciting! Evil spirits yielded to the authority of Your Name.

Narrator

Jesus told them not to rejoice in that the spirits were subject to them, but to rejoice that their names are recorded in heaven.

DISCUSS:

  • Jesus’ gave guidelines for taking the gospel to others outside of our own social venue. In what ways do those guidelines apply to us, today?

(Good answer: they all apply, when adapted to modern circumstances. For example, we, today, would take money and extra clothes on a long trip, while avoiding excess baggage and not relying on money or technology instead of the Holy Spirit. )

  • What is a modern application of each of the following guidelines for workers going to different cultures. (These guidelines come from Luke 10.)
  1. Pray to the Lord of the Harvest for workers
  2. Go in pairs.
  3. Go meekly like lambs and beware of wolves.
  4. Avoid taking excess baggage and avoid relying on money.
  5. Avoid letting friends sidetrack you on the way.
  6. Find persons of peace and accept their hospitality and food.
  7. Don’t just preach; also pray for the sick and cast out demons in Jesus’ name.
  8. Shake the dust and leave communities that reject those who come in Jesus’ name.
  9. Upon returning from a trip, report to your mentor what happened.
  10. Avoid excessive interest in seeing demons submit to Jesus’ authority.

 We Are People Of Yes!
Christ’s total authority makes him our Head.
He commanded to baptize and break sacred bread.
He proclaimed these commands for His own to obey,
So He meant every group of believers today.

But a hundred harsh voices wherever we go
Disregard Christ’s commands; they forbid and cry “NO!”
“You’re too new, not ordained, you lack knowledge,” they say.
And they point to men’s rules, pushing Scripture away.

Fellow servant of Christ, will men’s human decrees
Cause your group to delay and its passion to freeze?
Will you crown Christ as King? There is only one way.
Just shout YES! when you’re asked if it’s Christ you’ll obey!

Comments

  1. Suggest in the Notes that wolves are addressed. In this context, I sometimes mention enemies of the Gospel,
sometimes reference the spiritual warfare that is a constant factor in our work.
