Jesus Gave Living Water To A Wayward Lady And Her Pals

John 4

POY! SKIT GUIDELINES:

  • In a small group, participants might simply read their lines, or glance at their lines to get the idea so they can speak in their own words.
  • Most POY! skits require no practice in advance.
  • Have any small children play a brief part. Most scripts have an optional part for children, listed last under Participants.
  • Most scripts have a Narrator who should read the script beforehand to see how to keep moving the story along.
  • It is not necessary to employ costumes and objects, unless the skit recommends such.
  • It is not required to have an audience watch the skit. All present may participate.
  • Scripture and paraphrases, if any, usually appear in bold.

PARTICIPANTS:

Peter, who also serves as Narrator

Voice (of Jesus) To one side, read slowly and loudly.
Lady

Prompter (Optional). Prompter shouts a brief line and Companions repeat it.

Companions (Optional): children and all adults who want to take part. Make sure Companions know who the Prompter is, and that they are to repeat Prompter’s words.

SCRIPT:

Peter:

I’m Peter. We disciples are watching how Jesus dealt with a foreigner’s serious sin. We have arrived, tired after a long trip by foot, near Sychar, in Samaria, and we’re hungry.

Prompter & Companions

We’re hungry! Hungry!

Peter

Hey, guys, let’s go into town and buy some bread. I’m starved.

Voice

You go. I’ll stay here at the well and rest.

Peter

(Walk away.)

Lady

(Walk to where Peter had stood, pretending to hold a water pot on your head.)

Voice

Hello,  Ma’am. Will you, please, give Me a drink?

Lady

Hey! How is it that you, a Jew, ask me for a drink? I’m a Samaritan, and you snobbish Jews don’t have any dealings with us.

Voice

If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.

Lady

Oh sure! Sir, You’ve nothing to draw with and the well is deep. So where’ll you get that ‘living’ water? Are you greater than our father Jacob? He dug this well, and his sons and cattle drank from it.

Voice

Everyone who drinks this water will thirst again. But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst. The water that I give will become in him a well of water springing up, giving eternal life.

Lady

Sir, give me this water, so I won’t thirst and have to come all this way to draw water.

Voice

Go, call your husband and come back.

Lady

I have no husband.

Voice

You correctly said, you have no husband. You’ve had five husbands, and the one you’re with now is not your husband.

Lady

Oh, oh! Sir, I see that You’re a prophet.

Prompter & Companions

You’re a prophet! A prophet!

Lady

Our fathers worshiped in this mountain but you folks say to worship only in Jerusalem.

Voice

Lady, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. An hour is coming, and now is, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to worship Him. God is spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

Lady

I know that Messiah is coming, who is called Christ. When that One comes, He will declare all things to us.

Voice

I AM He. He who is speaking to is He.

Lady

(Gasp, and then cover your mouth, eyes wide open.)

Peter

(Come back and point at the woman.) Look guys. Amazing! Jesus was talking with that Samaritan woman. I wonder why. Oh, Look! The lady left her water pot. She’s hurrying into the city.

Lady

(To the audience) Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; could he be the Messiah?

Peter

Rabbi, eat.

Voice

I have food to eat that you do not know about.

Peter

Hey, guys, no one brought Him anything to eat, did they?

Voice

My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work. Do not say, “In four months the harvest will come.” Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes and see the fields, white and ready to reap.

Peter

(Point at audience.) Hey look! All those pagans have left the city, and are coming to us.

Lady

Do you hear what the Samaritans are telling me? They say, “It’s no longer only because of what you said that we believe; now we’ve heard for ourselves, we know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world.”

Peter

We disciples all rejoice. Praise God for living water!

Prompter & Companions

Living water! Living water!

DISCUSS:

(Ask the group these questions)

Jesus revealed to the Samaritan lady that He knew her secret sins. Why is it both disturbing and comforting to know that He is aware of our secrets, too?

What do we learn about worship from Jesus’ words to the lady?

Why does a new believer’s testimonial often attract others to Jesus?

Jesus said to lift up our eyes to see the fields that God has prepared for harvest. What neglected ethnic group or class of people in your area might be like the Samaritans, ready to receive Jesus?
