SCRIPT:

Satan:

(Laugh loudly and fiendishly. Gaze upward, point up and shout slowly.)

Up there it is ? foul planet earth!
There’s Adam! Eve! Up there so high!
I’ll fool that lady; she will lure
Her man to sin, and both shall die!

Angel

(Speak loudly and slowly).

We angels gaze upon God’s earth
But we can’t understand.
God made a race of men, but then
Let Satan ruin their perfect land!
(Point at Satan)

Satan

(Run among the people, jerking your head at them, hissing)

I’ll rule all men; I’ll be their god!
Those angels lack my regal pride,
They grovel, loyal, before God’s throne.
But soon they’ll wish they’d joined my side!

Angel

Men’s father Adam, strong and tall
And mother Eve close at his side
Enjoyed God’s smile in lovely bliss
Till Satan came, disguised, and lied!

Prompter & Companions

He lied! He lied!

Satan:

(Move away from the people and hold your arms by your side, body writhing snakelike. Shout as you speak.)

Hear me, my fellow infernal fiends!
That world is ours! I’ll rule it all!
My scheme will make God lose control
I know the way to make men fall.

Adam:

My name is Adam; I’m the first.
I’ll tell you how it all began.
God put me here in Eden’s bliss
To multiply a race called “man”.

Eve

(Go take Adam by his arm, and with the other hand gesture toward the people.)

Now guess who I am. Yes, I’m Eve.
Today the animals we tame.
It’s so much fun! We laugh with joy
As rabbits, lions and sheep we name.

Satan

(Step toward Eve; hold a hand out to her.)

Eve, hear this secret! Be like God
And know what’s good and bad ? be wise!
You’ll rule in Eden’s pleasant land!
This fruit will open wide your eyes!

Eve

(Start toward Satan, stop suddenly, scream and recoil back a few steps.)

Now, what are you? I have not seen
An animal that masters speech!
You’re dragon-like but look so wise!
So sharp and pointed are your teeth!

Eve

(Go slowly, a step at a time, toward Satan, pretend to take the fruit, take a bite, pause, and open your eyes wide. Move the pupils of your eyes in circles.)

“Oooo!”

Prompter & Companions

Oooo! Oooo! Oooo!”

Eve

(Pretend to take another fruit from Satan, and go hand it to Adam. Then go back and stand by Satan.)

Adam

(Look around, as though making sure God is not watching, and then pretend to take a big bite. Then roll your eyes and cry out, speaking slowly.)

Oh! Why’d I taste forbidden fruit?
We let that serpent be our guide!
We disobeyed! We’re nude! What shame!
The Lord is coming! Eve! Let’s hide!

(Run and grab Eve, and pull her away from Satan.)

Satan

(Laugh.)
Your sin, dear Adam, earns death’s curse.
How I enjoy accusing all!
You have no hope, since God’s decree
Requires death for all who fall.

Adam

That serpent said we’d never die.
We hide but cannot cloak our sins.
We dress in leaves to hide our blame!
But God makes clothes of slain sheep’s skins!

Angel

The grave is surely permanent,
God’s law states that with certainty,
For God alone has endless life;
No sinner lives eternally.

Adam

So there’s no hope for us at all?
Cold death’s too strong; it has no cure!
The dragon’s claws hold victims tight;
And God’s own law says death is sure.

Prompter & Companions

Death is sure! Death is sure!

Angel

We angels watch the tale unfold.
In awe, we watch those men of old,
First Adam, Noah, Abraham.
Then Jacob, Moses, Joshua bold.
Wise Samuel, David, Solomon,
Elijah, Ahab, Jeremiah,
Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel brave,
Queen Esther, Ezra and Nehemiah.

Satan

(Pretend to answer a cell phone.)
Excuse me, folks, I have a call!
It’s from my spies down on the earth,
Reporting progress ? sin abounds!
Indicting men imparts such mirth!

(Laugh joyfully, then stop abruptly and shake the phone. Listen again and scream angrily. Then speak slowly and defiantly.)

What’s that? A savior born on earth
That men dare call the Son of God?
No son of man withstands my lures,
His sin will prove that he’s a fraud!

Angel

Would God instruct His only Son
To take on flesh in Adam’s place
And stoop so far to be a man,
To bear the curse on men’s doomed race?

Adam

(Point at Satan.)

Beware, old snake! Recall God’s curse ?
In Eden long ago He said,
You’d crush the heel of Woman’s son,
But fatally He’d crush your head.

Satan

I tempted Jesus many times;
He always pushed my lure away.
Now Judas helps me rig my snare.
Aha! I’ll conquer Christ this day!

Adam

Mankind’s Accuser indicts Messiah:
“Death proves he’s sinned! Sin seals his grave!”
But Jesus bears no sin but ours;
He bleeds for us, our lives to save.

Eve

(Point at Satan.)

Made blind by hate, the snake saw not
That love fulfills the Law’s demands.
Christ snaps the serpent’s lying fangs
Though soldiers pierce those healing hands.

Prompter & Companions

Soldiers pierce those healing hands!

Adam

In death, Christ keeps the Sabbath rest,
But on the third day comes alive,
Destroying Satan’s power and death.
Now all who trust Him, He’ll revive.

Satan

No! No! It cannot be! Christ lives?
But God’s own law states His decree
That all who sin are doomed to die.
One sinless life has thwarted me?

(Groan loudly, howl and hiss at the people.)

Adam

(Point at Satan.)

God said, “Upon your belly go!”
When you, old snake, caused me to fall.
That curse is now achieved in full.
Fall down and crawl, Old Dragon, crawl!

Prompter & Companions

Crawl, Old Dragon, crawl!

DISCUSS:

Ask folks to listen as you explain what Paul wrote about Adam, in order to find why Jesus was called “the Final Adam”:

Through one man, sin entered into the world, and death through sin. Thus, death spread to all men, because all have sinned. However, just as death reigned through one man’s sin, life reigns much more through one man’s obedience, our Lord Jesus Christ. Just as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all believers will be made alive when He raises the dead.

Why is Jesus called the final Adam?

Some people say that sin is merely the product of ones, genes, upbringing and social influences, and that a sinner is actually a victim to be pitied. What is wrong with this from a biblical viewpoint?

What is the connection between Adam’s “original sin” and sins that one commits today?

Scripture calls Satan the old dragon and serpent. Since God’s curse made him crawl on his belly, what must that evil serpent had been like physically before he had to crawl?
