Jesus’ Ascended Into Glory As His Disciples Watched, Astounded, Acts 1:1-11

POY! SKIT GUIDELINES:

In a small group, participants might simply read their lines, or glance at their lines to get the idea so they can speak in their own words.

  • Most POY! skits require no practice in advance.
  • Have any small children play a brief part. Most scripts have an optional part for children, listed last under Participants.
  • Most scripts have a Narrator who should read the script beforehand to see how to keep moving the story along.
  • It is not necessary to employ costumes and objects, unless the skit recommends such.
  • It is not required to have an audience watch the skit. All present may participate.
  • Scripture and paraphrases, if any, usually appear in bold.

PARTICIPANTS:

Peter, who also serves as Narrator
Voice (of Jesus) Stand to one side, read slowly and loudly.
Angel

Prompter (Optional) Prompter shouts a brief line and Companions repeat it.

Companions (Optional): children and all adults that want to take part. Make sure Companions know who the Prompter is, and that they are to repeat Prompter’s words.

SCRIPT:

Peter

I am Peter. Come join Jesus’ disciples at His ascension. After Jesus rose from the dead, He appeared to us over a period of forty days. Now He has gathered us together on the Mount of Olives for His final instructions.

Voice

Wait in Jerusalem for what the Father promised. Remember what I told you. John baptized with water, but you’ll be soon baptized with the Holy Spirit.

Prompter & Companions

What does He mean?

Peter

We did not understand this, and I asked the question that was on all of our minds.

Peter

Lord, will you now restore the kingdom to Israel?

Voice

It’s not for you to know times that the Father has fixed by His own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you’ll be My witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth.

Peter

Hey! What’s happening? He’s going up, but without a ladder!

Prompter & Companions

He’s rising! He’s rising!

Peter

(Pointing up) Look! Look! How does He do that without wings? He’s getting higher! Oh!

Prompter & Companions

A cloud hid him! Wow!

Peter

The cloud received Him out of sight. We stood gazing intently into the sky, until two men in white clothing appeared beside us.

Angel

Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into the sky? Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come again in the same way as you have seen Him ascend.

DISCUSS:

What did Jesus tell His disciples to do, just before He ascended to heaven?

(Good answer: Wait in Jerusalem until they received power to be witnesses of what He had done.)

To what four places did Jesus say His followers would go and serve as His witnesses?

(Good answer: To people of 1) Jerusalem, 2) Judea, 3) Samaria and 4) the ends of the earth. Today these places correspond to 1) a church’s own city, 2) people of the same culture in the surrounding area, 3) people of another culture nearby, and 4) neglected peoples wherever they live.)
