Looking Down on Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, Jesus Foretold Events both Ominous and Hopeful

Based on Luke 21: 5-36

 POY! SKIT GUIDELINES:

  • In a small group, participants might simply read their lines, or glance at their lines to get the idea so they can speak in their own words.
  • Most POY! skits require no practice in advance.
  • Have any small children play a brief part. Most scripts have an optional part for children, listed last under Participants.
  • Most scripts have a Narrator who should read the script beforehand to see how to keep moving the story along.
  • It is not necessary to employ costumes and objects, unless the skit recommends such.
  • It is not required to have an audience watch the skit. All present may participate.
  • Scripture and paraphrases, if any, usually appear in bold.

PARTICIPANTS:

Peter, who also serves as Narrator
Voice (of Jesus) Stand to one side, read slowly and loudly.

SCRIPT:

Peter  I am Peter. Two days before Jesus’ death, He went with us disciples to the Mount of Olives. There, overlooking Jerusalem, I remarked, “See how beautiful and magnificent the great temple is! And such huge walls! No enemy could ever get past them! How magnificent!”
Prompter & Companions
Magnificent! Magnificent!
Voice  As for those things you’re looking at, the days will come in which there will not be left one stone upon another that will not be torn down.
Peter  What? How could that be? Rabbi, when will these things happen? What will be the sign when these things are about to take place?
Voice  Let no one mislead you; for many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He.’
When you hear of wars and disturbances, do not be terrified. These things must take place first; the end does not follow immediately.
Nation will rise against nation, there will be great earthquakes, and in many places plagues and famines. There will be terrors and great signs from heaven.
Peter

Oh, Lord, Spare us!

Prompter & Companions
Spare us! Spare us!
Voice  Your enemies will arrest and persecute you. They will put you in prison and take you before governors because of Me.
This will give you opportunity for your testimony. Do not prepare a defense beforehand, for I will give you answers and wisdom that your opponents will be unable to refute.
Peter  All this sounds so dire! Surely, Lord, you’ll return to establish your rule on earth by then.
Voice  You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends. They will put some of you to death, and you will be hated by all because of My name. Yet not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance, you will gain your lives.
Peter

It is hard to envision such a massive temple being demolished as totally as you say. When will that happen?

Voice  Much must happen first. When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that her desolation is near. Those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. Those in the city must leave. Those in the country must not enter the city; because these are days of vengeance,  so that all things which are written will be fulfilled.
Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days; there will be great distress upon the land and wrath to this people.
They will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led captive into all the nations; Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by Gentiles until their time is fulfilled.
Peter  Our holy city! Doomed!
Prompter & Companions
Doomed! Doomed!
Peter  And then? Will you return to rule over all the earth then?
Voice  Not yet. There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay, perplexity at the roaring of the sea and waves, men fainting from fear, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When you see these things begin to take place, take courage. Your redemption is drawing near.

DISCUSS:

Which events that Jesus foretold have already happened?

(Good answers: Jerusalem surrounded. Enslavement. False prophets. Wars. Earthquakes.)

Which of the foretold events may be near now, judging by current worldwide trends?

(Good answer: Signs of Jesus’ return flashing in the sky.)

Why do you suppose that Jesus warn that false prophets would predict the date of His return?

(Good answer: Many have done so. Even when the signs appear, no one will know the day or the hour of his return.)
